The Recuitment Process

  • Make a Booking.
  • Attend a YOU Session
  • Sit an interview
  • Officers selection
  • Complete the fitness test
  • Enlist Appointment

The interview process

After the YOU Session you will be booked to an assessment day where you will undergo a psychological interview, a medical assessment and a Defence Interview. You could attend the assessment day within a week of the YOU Session, if the position is in critical demand, or several months later if there are only a few positions available, or the intake dates are some way into the future. It all depends on the job.

The Defence Interview

Your Defence Recruiter will contact you prior to your Assessment Day to make sure you have a sound knowledge of both the job and the Service you hope to join. It is extremely important that you have researched both these areas thoroughly. As with any interview, the more you prepare and can display your knowledge to the interviewer, the better your chance of success.

We want you to do well, here are some of the things you will need to know…

Job description

Know the job you are applying for. Reading the full job description on the current Defence Force website is a great start. Pay particular attention to areas like training, pay & benefits and specific job duties.

Know the Defence Force and know your Service

General Defence questions will be asked…

Where you can expect to undertake your initial military training, for how long and what to expect from this training?

Where do you undertake your employment training, how long for and the expectations of this position?

The Defence Force guidelines

Read up on some of our guidelines. Take a look at the ADF Harassment Policy, the ADF policy on non-medical use of drugs and the Defence Force Discipline Act (Command and Discipline).

Your decisions

Make sure that you’ve thought about your own personal decisions, well enough to be able to express them to the people interviewing you. Things like…

Why you want the job in the first place?

What attracted you to the Defence Force?

How long you would expect to be enlisted or appointed for?

Where can you find all this information?

You can research your chosen Service in-depth on this website or by visiting the individual Navy, Army or Air Force pages. Make a list of potential questions and find the answers on these pages. We also recommend that you speak to a current member of the ADF, working in the Service you are applying for. This can be arranged by contacting your Defence Force Recruiter

Like any other interview

Although we are looking for correct answers to military specific questions, if you’ve ever been interviewed before, you’ll know that there are lots of other things you can do, to increase your chance of success. Here are just some examples… you probably know the rest.

  • Present yourself well and dress appropriately for a job interview
  • Speak clearly and fluently, this shows confidence
  • Know your resume and be able to expand on it if asked
  • Show interest and enthusiasm, we want to know you want the job
  • Don't be frightened to ask for clarification if unsure, this shows that your interest is genuine.

PILOTS ONLY - FLIGHT SCREENING PROGRAM

Successful applicants will be allocated to the next available Flight Screening Program at the BAE Systems Training Academy at Tamworth, NSW. The fortnight of training and assessment is divided into two courses, Basic and Advanced. Both encompass 15 hours of flight time and two simulator sessions. Again, you will be assessed on both your technical performance and your character. The Pilot Selection Agency website provides detailed information about this process.
