Period of Service

Australian Defence Force Academy

You will be appointed for an Initial Minimum Period of Service (IMPS) of nine years. Subsequent periods of service may be offered subject to the requirements of the ADF and your suitability for further service. You may tender your resignation at any time provided you do not have an outstanding Initial Minimum Period of Service obligation.

Defence Academy Entry Officers become liable to an IMPS from the graduation day of their second year of studies. This means that they may leave the Academy at any time up to the end of second year, without any obligation.

Your Careers Counsellor can advise on how IMPS will relate to your chosen occupation.

Graduate

You may tender your resignation at any time provided you do not have an outstanding Initial Minimum Period of Service obligation.

Graduate (Reserve)
All candidates who are appointed or enlisted into the Army Reserve may undertake volunteer service until age 65 (Compulsory Retiring Age) subject to the requirements of the Army and suitability for further service. Members may transfer out of an active element of the Army Reserve at any time.

The majority of jobs in the ADF are available as Full Time positions, many are also available as Part Time or Reserve positions. A select number of jobs are available through the Gap Year program.

Aviation Corps Officer (GSO Pilot)

You’ll fly within Australia and possibly overseas. Your initial flying will be with helicopter units, but you may convert to fixed wing, or be selected to train as a Qualified Flying Instructor. To apply for this role you will need to apply as a General Service Officer, and while due consideration is given, you aren't guaranteed of being allocated to the Corps of your choice.
