Today's Reserve

The Army Reserve is a diverse organisation full of people from varying civilian occupations. You can transfer from the full-time Defence Force or join as a new recruit.

Organise your own time

The great thing about the Army Reserve is that you can normally organise a working arrangement to fit in with the rest of your life. This is a part-time employer that understands your civilian commitments are a high priority and is accommodating in this regard. It's a part-time job where you can work as few as 14 days to as many as 150 days in a year. You can choose a flexible enlistment package with a combination of full or part-time service, in differing categories and states of readiness.

An ideal second job

If you already lead a full life with family, social and sporting commitments then this really is an ideal job for you. When these clash with your Reserve activities it's usually possible to organise time off so that you can accommodate both.

The Prince of Wales Award scheme

The Prince of Wales Award (POWA) scheme provides a development opportunity for Australian Defence Force (ADF) Reservists to enhance their individual experience and knowledge in their chosen civilian occupation or profession. It has been redeveloped to deliver greater benefits to Reservists, their employers and the ADF.

Stay local

Whilst travel is an option, most reservists join so that they can experience Army life and still work close to home. In most cases you'll find an Army Reserve unit within easy access of where you live. So you're not giving up too much of your life at home. You will still have ample time to see friends and family, as well as meet new people when you're working as a reservist.

Take the travel option

The Army continues to rely on its Reserve to provide individual reinforcement and rotation for its full-time Service, providing it with a stronger collective capability. So if you do want to travel, within Australia and overseas, training and operational activities may give you that chance.

Humanitarian Aid

Deployments

In recent years Army personnel have been deployed to provide humanitarian relief to tsunami and earthquake victims, in our region and overseas. Reservists have served alongside their full-time counterparts in peacekeeping missions in East Timor and Bougainville and operations in the Middle East and the Solomon Islands. They have also made valuable contributions to the community helping out in times of natural disasters such as floods, droughts and fires. These reservists are only deployed on a voluntary basis unless called out by the Government.
