The Air Force might be the youngest of Australia's three armed services however, it's the second oldest Air Force in the world. With such a large country to cover, Australia's Air Force needs are varied and specialised. We are an incredibly diverse organisation that requires a huge number of skilled personnel to operate our machinery, fly our aircraft and provide logistical and intelligence support.
The Royal Australian Air Force F/A-18 Hornet is a multi-role fighter designed for both air-to-air and air-to-ground missions. It is capable of air interception, air combat, close air support of ground troops, and interdiction of enemy supply lines.

The Air Force maintains a fleet of aircraft capable of performing many roles. Whether it is transport for disaster relief, humanitarian aid, relief efforts, tactical strike roles or perimeter air defence, our Air Force is ready to deliver.
The C-17 is a recent asset for the Air Force, expanding our heavy-lifting capabilities. With a load capacity of over 72,500kg it will greatly enhance our ability to support national and international operations and major disaster rescue and relief efforts. As well as being able to carry boxes of bulk cargo, it is capable of transporting up to 102 fully equipped troops, 90 stretcher patients, and a range of ADF hardware, including the M1A1 Abrams Tank and Chinook helicopter.
Communication and IT systems in the Air Force are among the most advanced in the world, developed largely to meet the demands of controlling aircraft across the globe, scanning the skies and transferring data for critical missions.

The future of the Air Force is very bright. Over the next few years, our fleet of F111s will be upgraded to the new F/A-18E Super Hornet, a modern, larger and more capable aircraft than our existing F/A-18 Hornets. Following from that, we are currently involved in the development of the F35 Lightning II.
The F35 is projected to be the multi-role fighter/bomber for the Air Force over the next 30 years. Currently in development in partnership with the US, UK and other allied nations, it will be among the most stealthy and advanced aircraft in the world. With three different variants available, all sharing 80% of their parts, it has also been designed to be cost effective in approach.
Pilots in the Air Force get to fly some of the fastest, largest and most hi-tech aircraft in the world. From the F/A-18 to the enormous C-17 Globemaster III, an Air Force pilot is well equipped to get the job done.
